Patio Installation Across North West London, North London, East London and Essex
A patio is the most-used hard surface in most gardens, and the one most likely to be sat on, walked across, eaten off and left out in the rain. A well-built patio settles into the garden and lasts for decades; a badly built one moves within a year and sits in standing water after every shower. We design and install patios across North West London, North London, East London and Essex, with the foundation given as much attention as the finished surface.
Patio Materials We Install
Porcelain paving
The most popular modern choice, in a range of stone-effect and concrete-effect finishes. Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, very low maintenance, and resistant to staining.
Indian sandstone
In tumbled, sawn and riven finishes, offering a natural variation in colour and texture across the surface.
Limestone
Where a more uniform, contemporary natural stone is wanted, with a cleaner and more even appearance.
Concrete paving slabs
In modern textured finishes that bear little resemblance to the products of twenty years ago.
Block paving
Where a patio is being designed to read continuously with an adjoining driveway or path.
Decking
In timber or composite, where a raised or split-level patio is the right answer for the garden.
Sub-Base and Falls
Patio failures come from the same place as driveway failures: a foundation that was inadequate for the job. A patio sub-base requires the topsoil to be excavated, a compacted base of crushed stone of the correct depth, and a mortar bed appropriate to the slab type.
Falls — the slight slope across the surface — are calculated to take water away from the house and any structures, and towards the lawn or a drainage outlet. A patio without a fall will hold water across the surface and will algae over and turn slippery within a season.
Jointing and Edging
The mortar or jointing compound between the slabs is more important than it looks. The wrong mix will crack or crumble within a few years, allowing water down into the bed below and weeds up through the joints. We use jointing compounds appropriate to the slab type, paying attention to the application temperature and the curing time recommended by the manufacturer.
Patio edges are detailed properly to stop the slabs from drifting outwards over time. Where the patio meets a lawn, a mowing strip is included so the grass can be cut to the edge without damage to the mower.
Steps and Level Changes
Most gardens have some level change between the house and the lawn, even where it is not obvious. Steps, raised patios and small retaining walls are designed into the patio rather than added on later, which gives a much better result than trying to bolt them on after the slabs are down.
Why Choose Ridgewell
A patio is one of the easier jobs to do quickly and badly, and one of the more rewarding to do properly. We are a family run firm with decades of experience, and our patios are built to last a generation. Photographs of the sub-base and the levels are taken before the slabs go down, so the client can see what they are getting beneath the surface.
