Driveway Installation and Replacement Across North West London, North London, East London and Essex
A driveway has to take more punishment than almost any other part of a property. It carries the weight of vehicles every day, deals with surface water in every season, and is exposed to direct sun and frost across the year. The difference between a driveway that lasts twenty years and one that lasts five is almost always what is underneath the surface rather than the surface itself. We design and install driveways across North West London, North London, East London and Essex, with the sub-base given as much attention as the finished material.
Driveway Surfaces We Install
Block Paving
A range of colours, patterns and block sizes, including herringbone, basketweave and stretcher bond laid patterns.
Resin-Bound Surfacing
A hard-wearing modern finish that sheds water through the surface itself, allowing it to comply with current drainage rules without separate drainage runs.
Tarmac & Asphalt
For larger driveways and commercial work, in standard black or coloured finishes.
Concrete & Stamped Concrete
For driveways where a continuous surface is preferred, including patterned stamped concrete finishes.
Gravel Driveways
With the appropriate edging and sub-base, including resin-bound gravel where a firmer surface is required.
Natural Stone Setts
For properties where a traditional finish is wanted, laid on a properly prepared and compacted base.
The Sub-Base — Where Driveways Are Won or Lost
Most driveway failures come from a sub-base that was too thin, too poorly compacted, or laid over ground that should have been dug out deeper. The finished surface, whatever it is, can only perform as well as what sits below it.
A sub-base for a domestic property typically requires excavation to a depth of around 250mm, followed by a compacted base of crushed stone of the appropriate type and depth, compacted in layers rather than all at once. Edging is set in concrete to retain the surface, and only then is the finishing surface laid.
We take photographs of the dig-out and the base before the surface goes down, so you can see what you are paying for. A driveway that has been done properly should not need attention for fifteen to twenty years.
Drainage and SuDS
Current planning rules require new driveways over five square metres to either drain to a permeable surface, such as a lawn or border, or to be built from a material that allows water to pass through it. Driveways that drain directly to the public sewer without addressing this require planning permission. We design the driveway to meet the drainage rules from the outset, either through the surface choice or through the layout of falls and soakaways within the property boundary.
Why Choose Ridgewell
A driveway is the most visible piece of work most properties have done at ground level, and one of the easier ones to cut corners on without it being obvious until years later. We are a family run firm with decades of experience, and the work is carried out to a written specification rather than to a price. Guarantees are issued on completed driveway installations.

Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should a driveway sub-base be?
For a domestic driveway we typically excavate to around 250mm, then lay a compacted base of crushed stone of the appropriate type and depth, compacted in layers rather than all at once. Edging is set in concrete before the finishing surface goes down.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
New driveways over five square metres must either drain to a permeable surface such as a lawn or border, or be built from a material that lets water pass through it. A driveway that drains directly to the public sewer without addressing this requires planning permission. We design the driveway to meet the drainage rules from the outset.
How long should a driveway last?
A driveway that has been installed properly, with a correctly excavated and compacted sub-base, should not need attention for fifteen to twenty years. The difference between a driveway that lasts twenty years and one that lasts five is almost always what sits beneath the surface.
Which driveway surfaces do you install?
We install block paving, resin-bound surfacing, tarmac and asphalt, concrete and stamped concrete, gravel including resin-bound gravel, and natural stone setts, across North West London, North London, East London and Essex.
