DRIVEWAY FAQS

How deep should a driveway sub-base be?

For a domestic driveway we typically excavate to around 250mm, then lay a compacted base of crushed stone of the appropriate type and depth, compacted in layers rather than all at once. Edging is set in concrete before the finishing surface goes down.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

New driveways over five square metres must either drain to a permeable surface such as a lawn or border, or be built from a material that lets water pass through it. A driveway that drains directly to the public sewer without addressing this requires planning permission. We design the driveway to meet the drainage rules from the outset.

How long should a driveway last?

A driveway that has been installed properly, with a correctly excavated and compacted sub-base, should not need attention for fifteen to twenty years. The difference between a driveway that lasts twenty years and one that lasts five is almost always what sits beneath the surface.

Which driveway surfaces do you install?

We install block paving, resin-bound surfacing, tarmac and asphalt, concrete and stamped concrete, gravel including resin-bound gravel, and natural stone setts, across North West London, North London, East London and Essex.
