Pebble Dashing and Render Repair Across North West London, North London, East London and Essex
Pebble dash, sometimes called rough cast, is the textured exterior finish made by throwing small stones into a wet render coat. It has been a common finish on British houses since the 1920s and remains a practical exterior covering — it hides minor imperfections in the brickwork beneath, takes the weather well, and lasts for decades when applied properly. We apply and repair pebble dash and other rendered finishes across North West London, North London, East London and Essex.

How Pebble Dash Is Applied
Properly applied pebble dash is a two-coat job. A base coat — the scratch coat — is applied first and keyed by drawing horizontal lines across the surface while it is still wet. A finishing coat is then applied and the stones are thrown in by hand while it is still soft enough to hold them. The wall is then left to cure.
Pebble dash that has been applied directly to a poorly prepared wall, or laid in one rushed coat, will hollow and blow off within a few years. We prepare the substrate properly, mix the render to suit the wall, and apply it in the right number of coats with the right curing time.
Render Alternatives
Modern silicone-based renders and through-coloured monocouche renders are now widely used as alternatives to traditional pebble dash. They give a different appearance — smoother, more contemporary — and have their own pros and cons in terms of longevity, repair and cost. Where a client is open to alternatives, we are happy to talk through what suits the property best.
Repairing Existing Pebble Dash
The most common pebble dash problem is sections that have come loose from the wall — known as hollowing or blowing. Where this is isolated to one or two areas, the loose render is removed, the substrate is inspected for the underlying cause, and the area is re-rendered to match. Matching the stone colour, size and density is one of the harder parts of the job and we take the time to get it as close to the original as possible.
Where the entire wall has begun to hollow, full removal and replacement is the more cost-effective approach. A wall that has been patched too many times begins to look like patchwork however carefully each repair has been done.
Why Choose Ridgewell
Pebble dash and render are jobs where the finish is in plain sight on the wall of the house for decades. A family run firm with decades of experience gets the preparation right, mixes the render properly, and finishes the work to a standard the team is comfortable leaving behind.

Pebble Dashing FAQs
Common questions about pebble dashing, render repair and re-rendering. If your question is not answered here, send a photograph of the wall with your enquiry and we will give you a straight answer.
How long does pebble dashing last?
Applied properly onto a well-prepared wall, pebble dash lasts for decades — it is one of the longest-lived exterior finishes there is. The usual reason it fails early is poor preparation or a rushed single coat, which is why we prepare the substrate properly and apply it in the right number of coats with the right curing time.
Can you repair just one section, or does the whole wall need redoing?
Where the problem is isolated to one or two areas, we remove the loose render, check the substrate for the underlying cause and re-render just that area to match. Full removal and replacement only becomes the better option when the whole wall has started to hollow — at that point repeated patching ends up looking like patchwork and costing more over time.
Will you be able to match my existing pebble dash?
Matching the stone colour, size and density is one of the harder parts of the job, and we take the time to get a repair as close to the original as possible. We will be honest at the survey stage about how close a match is realistically achievable on your particular wall.
Why is my pebble dash cracking or coming away from the wall?
Sections coming loose from the wall is called hollowing or blowing, and it is the most common pebble dash problem. It usually traces back to the original preparation, moisture getting behind the render, or movement in the wall. We inspect for the underlying cause before re-rendering, so the repair addresses why it failed rather than just covering it.
Is modern render better than traditional pebble dash?
Neither is simply better — they suit different goals. Silicone-based and through-coloured monocouche renders give a smoother, more contemporary look, while traditional pebble dash is hard-wearing and hides imperfections in the brickwork. Each has its own trade-offs on longevity, repair and cost. Where you are open to alternatives, we will talk through what suits the property best.
Can pebble dash and render be painted?
Yes. We paint rendered finishes using a masonry paint of an appropriate type for the surface. Painting can refresh the look of a tired wall and add a layer of weather protection, and we will advise on the right product for your finish.
Do you work on new builds and extensions, not just repairs?
Yes. As well as repairs and re-rendering, we apply new pebble dashing on extensions, new builds and on properties having existing brickwork covered for the first time.
